I decided to wonder around with my camera at night and shot some natural light shots of some of the places I go to or pass by everyday. Doing this with my 24-105mm F4 lens is pretty much a waste of time. The lens is just too slow for night time shots. So I put on my 28mm F1.8 prime lens. This gave me a 2 stop advantage and set my camera to -1EV. Even with these settings, my shutter speed at times was still very slow. I also found it quite exciting using a prime lens. You have to move around a lot and it makes the process of taking photos quite enjoyable! Doesn’t make you so lazy with a zoom lens. All the shots were with automatic white balance.

Excellent, Gwyn. Even though it’s the blurriest one you included, I think I like the fire heart the best.
Have you tried the LightRoom 3 beta yet? The colour noise reduction is awesome — I’m happy using ISO 1600 now, where I used to top out at 800. That would be very useful for these shots…
Wow! I’ve not tried Lightroom 3 beta yet! I might wait till I get home to try it… Don’t want to mess anything up while I’m here 😉
Here here for Lightroom 3 beta ISO 1600 is definitely usable, perhaps not for large prints but for small prints, screen and web no problems.
Impressive! I might take a few ISO 1600 shots while I’m here… then I can experiment with them when I install Lightroom 3 beta 🙂
